Colton 2 -1 Dewsbury Rangers

With both teams suffering during November and December, this game served up a decent display with both teams ‘going for it’.

Colton struck very early when Joe Spencer bundled the ball over the line from a Jono Goodwin corner on 4 minutes. This set the tone, as Colton were very dominant all over the pitch and ought to have extended their lead. Chance after chance went begging; some shots wide or over and some shots expertly saved by the Dewsbury ‘keeper. It was only a matter of time before the hosts scored again.

They did so, though not before Dewsbury showed what they were all about going forward and their striker was nimble and quick, creating a few anxious moments in the home defence.

Colton’s second goal came on 30 minutes. Max McCormick weaved his magic and set up

Danny Coates who slid the ball beneath the ‘keeper.

Half time 2 – 0.

After oranges, Colton created other opportunities at the start of the second half when, again, they ought to have put the game to bed.

This half was more even in terms of momentum and Dewsbury almost pulled one back half way through, however Adam Hartley in the Colton net stuck up a right arm to keep the shot out.

Toward the latter part of the game, Colton found a little more space in the final third, however with a combination of ill judged decisions and great goalkeeping the score remained 2 – 0.

On 83 minutes, Dewsbury pulled one back. A free kick was floated in and whilst Colton’s defence hesitated, the ball was in the onion bag.

Colton saw the remaining minutes out.

Final score 2 -1.

These two teams play against each other next week in the YOBL Shield at Dewsbury.
