Colton 4 – 2 Idle

Firstly, thanks to Idle for joining us for refreshments after the game.

Now the game……Colton got the points though they came with 3 goals in the last 18 minutes that changed the outcome.

Idle were the better team in the first half. Colton were poor across virtually every part of their game.

The visitors took the lead on 13 minutes with a super header from a free kick. Idle had most of the possession and caused the home side further anxious moments. Stand-in ‘keeper Ben Vickers had to be alert on a couple of occasions.

Colton equalised on 23 minutes. Some good build up play from midfield between James Green and the very impressive Ciaran Ward, created space for Brandon Bennett-Whitmore to cross superbly. The ball found the outstretched leg of Danny Coates at the far post.

The rest of the half followed the pattern of the earlier exchanges; Colton unable to get going; Idle always looking a threat.

As it was, 1 -1 was the score line at drinks.

Colton’s half time talk made no difference to start with. Idle went 1 – 2 up from a penalty on 47 minutes. Eventually, Colton began to get their act together. At this point, mention should be made of Vickers again who saved low down from a point-blank effort to prevent Idle extending their lead. For a short period, the game became scruffy with plenty of stop starts due to various fouls from both sides.

However. with 18 minutes remaining, Coates was put through by James Kilcoyne with a slide rule pass. Coates tapped home to make it 2 – 2. This woke lethargic Colton who scored 11 minutes later.

A corner was cleared but in the second phase, Chris Hick found Joe Spencer lurking in the six-yard area. Spencer made no mistake with a crisp volley. 3 – 2.

Idle tried to rescue a point and kept threatening. Needless free kicks put Colton under pressure, though they withstood the Idle attacks.

Colton scored their fourth on 90 minutes. A free kick by Joe Horner found Spencer’s head. His cushioned header created a bit of havoc in the Idle box; Hick scored from close range making it 4 -2.

Colton are at home to Horsforth next week.
