Championship

Colton 0 - 2 Beeston

Beeston took the points in a scrappy match with little quality. The visitors played the better football however.

Not much was going on in the first 30 minutes with both teams giving the ball away; Colton more so than Beeston. Beeston had a few shots that Adam Hartley in the Colton net did well to keep out.

With half an hour played, a through ball was collected low down by Hartley who got to the ball slightly quicker than the onrushing Beeston striker. Hartley was a bit miffed by the challenge and he saw red from Mr Gibbons. Joe Spencer went in net as understudy. After some delay, the referee awarded a penalty to Beeston and they lead 0 – 1 at half time. Before all of this, a Beeston player was ‘sin binned’ for back chatting to the official.

A reshuffle of the Colton formation at half time saw them go 342. In the early stages of the second half they had some much needed impetus going forward and they almost equalised. However, on 53 minutes, Beeston went 0 – 2 up with a scruffy own goal as the ball pinged around the Colton 6 yard box.

Substitutes were made by Colton and they played better. Jono Goodwin and Brandon Bennett-Whitmore combined well up front with both players having their shots blocked from close range. Ciaran Ward added some energy to support the ever running Sam Mac. However, Colton fired blanks (the first time this season) and couldn’t get back into the game.

On reflection, stand-in ‘keeper Spencer had little to do during the match. Even though Beeston won the fixture 0 – 2 this was more down to Colton’s poor forward play.

Thanks to the Beeston lads for joining us for refreshments after the game.
