Colton 2 – 0 Garforth Rangers
Colton got the three points, however the match was more even than the previous game between these two teams.
Garforth bossed the early stages. Their quick passing and movement in midfield had Colton chasing shadows. Thankfully for Colton there wasn’t any goal threat. Half way through the first period, Colton started to get their act together. A switch in midfield helped the 3 of Rob Ashworth, Adam Kinghorn and Chris Hick to break up the play and set Colton going forward. Chances came and went with a combination of fine goalkeeping by the Garforth ‘keeper and some wayward shooting from the Colton front line.
Colton almost scored when Joe Drake’s long range effort hit the cross bar and bounced down very close to or over the line; the referee deemed it not to have crossed the line and there was no VAR in place.
Half time 0 – 0
A change of personnel at half time, and a few focused comments had Colton on the front foot early on in the second half. Jordan Thackery continued his aggressive play by attacking the Garforth full back Colton eventually broke the deadlock. A corner on 54 minutes was whipped in by Jono Goodwin and Chris Wayman headed home at the near post for his fourth goal of the season. In the melee Ben Vickers attempted the most disgraceful over head kick from the corner ever seen at grass roots level, the slap of him hitting the ground and subsequent moans and groans illustrated the pathetic result of his efforts.
The goal seemed to settle Colton, and although Garforth had a few free kicks, the hosts’ defence dealt with whatever was thrown at them. Other goal scoring opportunities were created by Colton; however they were unlucky not to take advantage of them with crossed balls just evading their oncoming strikers. They needed the additional goal as breathing space.
It came on 75 minutes when some neat play on the right created a shooting chance for Goodwin. His shot was initially saved by the Garforth ‘keeper, however his fumble couldn’t stop the ball going over the line. Was it an own goal though??
That was it really; the game petered out and the final result was 2 – 0.
Colton are at home next week against Fairbank.
