Two goals inside the first 3 minutes gave Colton the upper hand. A thunderbolt of a shot in the 85th minute sealed a perfect home win.
On a very warm day and with the championship already bagged, Colton made sure that their unbeaten home league record remained in tact.
Josh Naylor struck inside 60 seconds. It was James Green’s amazing first touch and pass that did the damage as he found Naylor cutting in from the left. Naylor made no mistake.
Two minutes later, Danny Coates scored from a sublime pass by Joe Spencer in centre midfield that carved open the Leeds defence. 2 – 0 on three minutes.
Leeds eventually got into the game and asked a few searching questions. However the Colton defence of Chris Hick in goal and a well marshalled back four of Max McCormick, Chris Wayman, Joe Drake and captain Joe Horner did their job to keep the opposition out.
Colton created other opportunities and with a little more composure in front of the net could (should?) have extended their lead. As it was, Leeds City grew into the game. Tom Whelan though was having none of it, he was buzzing around breaking play up in midfield.
When Leeds City did get through, Hick saved well at the feet of the onrushing forward.
Colton renewed their attacking threat as the half came to a close. Cameron O’Connor was creating havoc down their right as he pushed the Leeds defence backwards.
At oranges it was 2 – 0
Much of the same in the second half. Leeds played some decent stuff (their 10, 12 and 17) created quite a bit, however they lacked the finishing touch.
Colton played much better. They searched for a third however it didn’t come despite much pressing and channel play. A couple of substitutions gave a little more calmness to their play and eventually on 85 minutes Colton scored their third.
McCormick (moved from full back to the number 10 role, via right mid) picked up the ball in the centre circle. No one closed him down and as he got to about 25 yards out he hit a screamer into the top of the net. It was quite an amazing strike from such a distant.
Then that was it.
Final score 3 – 0
Colton’s home league record for the season was played 10; won 9 drew 1.
